Today's conversation re: restorative justice opened a powerful discourse for our cafe. The topic of justice and the prison system here in the US is deep and wide. It is an area where social and economic justice have collapsed into one another to form a black hole in America's soul. Our culture tends to believe the myth that slavery ended (repeat of above link) back around the time of the civil…

Today's conversation re: restorative justice opened a powerful discourse for our cafe. The topic of justice and the prison system here in the US is deep and wide. It is an area where social and economic justice have collapsed into one another to form a black hole in America's soul. Our culture tends to believe the myth that slavery ended (repeat of above link) back around the time of the civil war. It didn't really end then and is currently at a scale that dwarfs those earlier days. We need to look at this issue as it is, call it for what it is and be appalled that the United States of America has industrialized and "legitimized" slavery through the prison system.

We will continue programming on the justice system for the future. I was speaking to Molly just a short while ago and suggested Occupy Cafe might open a section for Restorative Justice. I advocate a way for people to understand how to take action in their communities to install systems for justice that honors human value and potential. Anyone else who feels moved in this direction. There are quite a number of channels to open for discussion:

Prison-industrial complex lobbying (ALEC)

profit driven criminalization

slave labor

human rights and prison conditions

racial targeting for numbers and profit

victim-less crimes

non-prosecuted blue blood criminality (Wall St.)

restorative justice

punitive justice

to name just a few for illumination.
