“The chief cause of problems is solutions.”

- Eric Sevareid (CBS news journalist from 1939 to 1977)

Why Things Bite Back: Technology and the Revenge of Unintended Consequences by Edward Tenner (1996), former executive editor for physical science and history at Princeton University Press

Even when used to better the world, technology fosters unforeseen, often unpleasant consequences that Tenner calls "revenge effects." Technology continues to replace acute life-threatening problems with slower-acting, more persistent ones – the unintended consequences of the mechanical, chemical, biological, and medical forms of ingenuity that have been hallmarks of the progressive, improvement-obsessed modern age.

Problems = Opportunity for discovery = Challenge to renew perspective

@Inga: I believe you should get a confirmation message on your screen saying that the invites have been sent.

@Robert: as someone whose work involves engaging people both virtually and face-to-face, I'm keenly of these challenges. I also think that our use of tech like this is very much in its infancy. Think about what it must have been like five years after the telephone began to get adopted on a wide scale. One of the most interesting aspects of this for me is the development of processes for integrating face-to-face, asynchronous virtual (like this thread) and synchronous virtual (like our cafe calls). I see enormous richness to be tapped there, once we create and become comfortable with processes that take advantage of the unique strengths of each of these three modalities.

These problems are all great examples (that we rarely consider) of how technology designed to improve communication can also diminish it or make it problematic in new ways.

Hi there, I have tried twice now to invite friends from my gmail account. Each time I hit "invite" nothing appears to happen...can you please tell me if I've been successful or if I've spammed my friends...thanks.

Ben said that there is a "harvest" tab in the "calls" menu. There isn't that option available for me.

I am trying to get to the "harvest" feature. I don't see a link on the occupy home page.  Clicked on calls>current call menus. It went to a page. First on the page was “click here to register”. I’m already registered. How do I navigate to "harvest"?

Why is it, in this leaderless, anarchic movement based on the fundamental value of free speech, that the website moderators are vetting and "approving" what gets posted as a blog?

"Happy Birthday Occupy Wall Street ... thoughts on Year One"

Fifteen years ago, I ran across a book, "100 Most Influential People in History," during one of my dalliances to my local Marin County bookstore. "Influential People" was one man's assessment on exactly that. But how he determined his rankings was the interesting part. They weren't always the reasons you would think. But after thinking about it, they made complete sense. For example:George Washington was ranked in the top 40 of all time. Understandable. But the reason why ... not so much. You…See More
