Targeting the 1%

Movements need distinct targets to galvanize & motivate supporters.

From the beginning, the Occupy Movement has aspired to represent the 99%, therefore the natural targets of the Movement are the members of the 1% & their lifestyles.

We should aim to disrupt & subvert their lives in proportion to the extent that their greed, selfishness & irresponsibility have disrupted & subverted the lives of members of the 99% (i.e. "An eye for en eye" or "You f*ck with…

Occupy the 1% in 2012

The 1% live in a different world from the rest of us. They inhabit exclusive neighborhoods; travel in private limousines, helicopters, jets, yachts, etc.; shop in exclusive boutiques, delicatessens, galleries, etc.; eat at exclusive restaurants; attend exclusive schools, colleges, benefits, fundraisers, parties, balls, etc.; belong to exclusive clubs, societies, etc.; have access to exclusive & inside investing information & business & employment opportunities; have privileged…

On Blacklisted Conversations

This is a temperature check. I have general sense of what the response will be, but before I "test the waters" I will never really know for sure. So here goes...

I view the Occupy movement as a movement engaged in reestablishing social justice. We have lost a great deal of ground, seemingly an irredeemable amount of ground, to corporate and big money interests that have corrupted our governments, our economics, our politics, our judiciaries, our societies.

Occupy has spread…

Draft of Occupy Manifesto

**This is only a draft for your consideration. I will flesh out points in the coming days***

Deep at  the heart of the OWS movement is a broken social contract. The contract after WWII wasn’t work hard and you’ll be rewarded the contract was work hard, stay with the company, be loyal, and you will be rewarded all your life and you and your family will be take care of well into your old age. In Europe they did that with socialism, corporatism, and government in America we put…

DailyKos Plugs Occupy's 2/29 Anti-ALEC Actions

Nice piece from DKos regular Meteor Blades.  Here's the heart of it, with some good links about the protest and a rousing defense of the hard and valuable work being done by so many Occupiers:

The damage done by the corporations that fund ALEC and its stable of mostly Republican legislators is immense and…

Summit on CoreChange in Cincinnati

Something powerful, something new under the sun happened in Cincinnati this weekend. A three day summit on changing Cincinnati in fundamental ways, an effort to rethink our city with an eye toward creating a just, community-oriented, sustainable city.

This conference was the brain child of Doctor Victor Garcia, a physician whose experience with young people from urban neighborhoods who were shot gave him a close-up view of the problem. One day he found himself with a heart-broken…

Class Warfare: Which Side Are You On?

"Over the last thirty years, the United States has been looted. The rich and powerful, the 1-percent, have taken a disproportionate share of the economic gains that we've all worked for. As a consequence America is teetering on the brink of Plutocracy. To remedy this inequity and restore Democracy, fundamental changes must be made.

The first step is recognition that we're in a class war and must take sides."

1% US banks gamble $5 million per US household; $532 trillion total

"Reuters and wanttoknow.info provide prima facie evidence that the US 1% runs Wall Street as rigged-casino gambling to transfer wealth from the 99% to themselves. The amount of money fraudulently gambled is not millions of dollars, not billions, not even tens of trillions, but over five hundred trillion ($532,000,000,000,000).

Look at Demonocracy’s images to get an idea of this magnitude of money.

Let this sink in: $532 trillion means that the 1% US banksters gamble…

It's the Wealth Gap, Stupid: Why the truly alarming economic trend is not income inequality

"In recent years, the fortunes of the Romneys and others in their cohort have continued to grow, notably diverging from the majority of Americans still struggling to deal with a slow economic recovery. The Occupy Wall Street protestors stole the media spotlight this past fall by creatively highlighting these discrepancies. President Obama has taken notice and, as reflected in his State of the Union address, is teeing up inequality as a major a campaign theme for the fall. But it…

Producers vs. Moochers, Freeloaders And Losers - The Cruel Pro-Rich Propaganda Of The Right

""Producers" and "parasites." Cruel language justifying extreme greed seems to be mainstream now. Even Presidential candidates feel free to disparage 99% of us! In today's right-wing folklore government by We, the People is an evil thing that takes from "producers" and gives to "moochers," "freeloaders," and "losers." Government and taxes "take money out of the economy." Decision-making by We, the People is "collectivism" and "mob rule." And those of us who think the insanely…

Good Luck Occupiers, But Here’s Why “The Global Square” Won’t Work

"The Global Square is something Occupy and other protesters need. To scale Occupy’s flat organizational structure, it will require a way for geographically dispersed groups to interact without using representatives. I believe in Occupy’s goal of widespread, grassroots institutional change, and The Global Square will help. However, here’s why it might not work as well as planned:

1. The Global Square Will Be An Echo Chamber

2. There’s Already Diaspora

3. Still…

"Happy Birthday Occupy Wall Street ... thoughts on Year One"

Fifteen years ago, I ran across a book, "100 Most Influential People in History," during one of my dalliances to my local Marin County bookstore. "Influential People" was one man's assessment on exactly that. But how he determined his rankings was the interesting part. They weren't always the reasons you would think. But after thinking about it, they made complete sense. For example:George Washington was ranked in the top 40 of all time. Understandable. But the reason why ... not so much. You…See More
