Greetings to all Occupiers in this cafe. The "Core Conversation" thread seems to be rife with talk of a different structure and process for what we call our "economy." I am creating this thread with…Continue

“What’s Next?” Ask “What’s Here?”
This is a death we are living through, the slow unfolding of multiple interlocking catastrophes, the deconstruction and reformation of every social and natural system you can name: politics, economics, social relations, culture, the eco-system, the human spirit. It is also a birth of something new. In fact, what is being birthed is a mass realization that there is no way to separate any of these realms from one another. At the deepest…Continue

A PASTORAL LAMENT FOR MY COUNTRY
America, America, my country ‘tis of thee,
Sweet land of liberty
Of thee I sing
America, oh America
America the Beautiful has fallen.
You could feel the tension and raw energy crinkling throughout the air as the marchers once again began their journey into downtown Seattle. The Occupy Movement is the prophetic voice of God calling out to the nation to “repent” and turn from its…

The Occupation is gaining depth and breadth, nationally and globally. The appearance is that spontaneous actions have arisen and continue to proliferate, cross-pollinate and act independently from the original occupation on Wall Street itself. Though there is a groundswell of coordination, no one is directing, no manifestos have appeared. No leaders have been elected. No one speaks for it all. The message may appear to be muddled, yet action appears everywhere and support materializes as if…Continue
I deleted it because it was grumpy and I had hesitated to post it in the first place.
There's a working group forming around Studio Occupy and potentially also an emerging broadcast network. This needs a couple more weeks of incubation and I personally need a couple weeks to clear my plate. (Alas, Monday mornings are particularly difficult for me to attend the cafe calls!)
On a personal level, I've just joined the board of the Compassionate Action Network, and whenever possible I'm inviting compassion into the heart of the Occupy conversation. It seems to me that the desire to co-create a compassionate society is a through line for the various aspects of the movement, and this could suggest one way of responding to the questions about what OWS is for.
I'll email you two articles that I've written for Napa Valley Life Magazine on the Happiness Initiative and Compassionate Communities. These might be helpful conversation starters.
Lastly for now, here's an appreciative question that I've posed on Occupy4Love:
If the Eurozone experiment, among others, teaches us that money is not the basis for unity, then what is? What would you say is the basis for unity and how might we build "a more perfect union" upon that foundation?
Thanks for all you do!
I've been active with a number of projects, including Studio Occupy (www.StudioOccupy.org). What you have co-initiated here is very good. I look forward to spend more time engaged in generative conversation, probably after the 16th.
Hi Gary, A true master of the word; you are! Vic :)
