2/20 Vital Conversation—Change Agents: Who & what are they actually?

Click here to register (your PIN # is good for all future Vital Conversation calls)

What does it mean to be a change agent? "I support change.  I'd love to see it, but I'm not sure I can picture myself leading the charge.  I do like the conversations, though."  Is this person less of a change agent than someone who was born with a protest sign in their hands?  What about the action of the polar ice cap melting?

What is it that actually creates change?  What actions are vital?   Where is the "control panel" of change?  To what degree might it be in "our" hands?   How might change involve people and/or actions we might not associate with change agents?

You are the conversations starters this morning...

We didn't directly get to " What is it that actually creates change?" but there were clearly divergent views in the call today. Some feel that internal changes are fluff, not essential to 'saving the world.' Others, me in this second group, feel like the internal change is the big deal. We do not truly find ourselves together when we are angry, pissed off, indignant, afraid, etc. These are all forms of fear, and necessarily isolate us from each other.

We can stop the Juggernaut of corporatism and nation-state politics, but if we still hold the same old 'World4' emotions, our 'new world' will soon resemble the old.

Another disadvantage to too much focus on externals: when do find happiness? When the corporations are all dismantled? When the government is honest and just? When the Oceans regain their health? The land? I do not wish to wait so long to be happy. I do my best as a change agent, even if the effort is no more effective than a hummingbird trying to stop a forest fire one drop at a time.  Because so long as I do my best I am in integrity, and hence at least allows for the possibility of me tapping into the peace and love that are inherent in this living moment.

"Happy Birthday Occupy Wall Street ... thoughts on Year One"

Fifteen years ago, I ran across a book, "100 Most Influential People in History," during one of my dalliances to my local Marin County bookstore. "Influential People" was one man's assessment on exactly that. But how he determined his rankings was the interesting part. They weren't always the reasons you would think. But after thinking about it, they made complete sense. For example:George Washington was ranked in the top 40 of all time. Understandable. But the reason why ... not so much. You…See More
