An open space for global conversation
Recently in the UK,Xmas card stamps have gone up by a third, I have decided this year to a make my own and deliver where i can by hand, send my own hand made cards over the net, as attachments, thus cutting out the cost of cards and postage. this amount of save with European postage and UK will be quite considerable for a retired schoolteacher on a very basic pension.
II intend to send the money to Amnesty International/ Madicine san Frontieres/Farm Africa
I would really like to cut out my British Telecom, like most people I rarely use my land phone and it is used mainly for Internet connection this bill runs inti £200/300 a year annually, any ideas please as this could be used for better purposes. Martin Shaw Musician/ex SchoolteacherILEA

Thanks for staring this thread, Martin.
We're having a similar conversation about holiday cards in our household. Planning an e-version instead of using dead trees this year. I've also been thinking about he exorbitant rates we pay for internet, phone and cable in the US. Recently heard (can't remember the source) that France treats all these as public gods and provides them centrally and universally for something like $40/month, with internet speeds that are way higher than the fastest we get here. All part of the larger question of what belongs in The Commons and how we can best provide/protect it.
Thanks for your reply, and maybe the answer to my communication provided British Telecom maybe I should hunt down a Green cable provider.Re the tree I,ve got a little one growing in the back garden!! then I got to thinking whats all this fuss about Xmas, the story about the legend is just not true ( the pope mentioned same just recently ) he certainly wasn,t born on the date we celebrate, andI,m not too interested in Rerligion. I certainly think its its nice to celebrate yhe winter solstice with a big feast, to try and lift the gloom of the Grey Lid of England ( who knows we might have a white one great for the kids, as long as I don,t have to pull the sledge!!
Its all about retail therapy and all that goes with that, wish we had a Thanks giving day in Egland where we could spend a day with our friends,I will communicate with friends and relations this year just to let them know I,m thinking about them and I,m still alive and kicking ( just about ) I think that might have to do about this topic but over to all of you ( perhaps) Martin Shaw PS I will get my photo put on the site as soon as my son shows me how to do it.
