For all the things we can point to that need an upgrade or "fixing", there are at least as many things that are worthy of awe, wonder and sheer thankfulness.

Life mirrors life at all levels.  My beloved Pia's mother passed on barely a few hours from this writing.  She had been living with us for the past year and a half until she broke her hip just a few days before the New Year and had to move into a skilled care home.

As we sat with her, I thought about our time together.  She was not easy and often tested my patience with the immediacy of her demands.  Yet, I always noticed I had a choice.  I could trudge down some dark road of resistance, or I could step into the warm light of appreciation for Pili's wild wit and mischievousness.  Her eyes had this wholly unique sparkle to them when she ignited one of her countless and colorful escapades.

Now, as then, in choosing appreciation, something miraculous occurs.  The world transforms.  Big money still lingers in politics and we've yet to see half the normal snowfall in the Sierra Nevada mountains.  But my outlook is especially bright and the possibility for all good things feels stronger than ever.  Such is the power of gratitude.

I dedicate our Occupy Heart journey to Pili, a woman who understood the principle of gratitude and whose life was an ever-present demonstration of its wonder and gift.

As you examine your life, tell a story of how gratitude might have created a transformation in your life?

"Happy Birthday Occupy Wall Street ... thoughts on Year One"

Fifteen years ago, I ran across a book, "100 Most Influential People in History," during one of my dalliances to my local Marin County bookstore. "Influential People" was one man's assessment on exactly that. But how he determined his rankings was the interesting part. They weren't always the reasons you would think. But after thinking about it, they made complete sense. For example:George Washington was ranked in the top 40 of all time. Understandable. But the reason why ... not so much. You…See More
