We can mean many things when we speak the word ground:
  1. Earth upon which we stand
  2. To embody something; to bring from concept to reality
  3. To experience a feeling of connection and security
  4. To energetically root one's self with Earth

Each of these descriptions of ground is unique, yet they each relate to connection with the physical.  When we speak of #Occupy, we speak of actions on the ground; restoring justice among Earth's beings regardless of how many legs—or not—nature has bestowed; restoring right relationship  with the commons—our inalienable right to enjoy Earth's bounty in a just and sustainable way.

There are ways in which a bank can unlawfully disrupt one's security with the land on which one lives and...there are ways in which your connection to Earth is wholly up to you.  There are ways in which a corporation can find ways to legally hijack the water beneath your feet and...there are ways to stand your ground without raising a finger.  And of course, there are times and ways in which ground must be held and protected from those without conscience.

How do you experience your relationship with respect to:
  • Physical Body ground
  • Emotional ground
  • Psychic ground
  • Commons ground

Duane Elgin (who will be our conversation starter on Monday, 9/10) shared this Frederick Douglas quote with me via an email earlier today.  For me, it speaks to the challenge of standing/owning your ground at a time when there is so much to be outraged about...

"At a time like this, scorching irony, not convincing argument, is needed. O! Had I the ability,

and could reach the nation's ear, I would today, pour out a fiery stream of biting ridicule, blasting

reproach, withering sarcasm, and stern rebuke. For it is not light that is needed, but fire;

it is not the gentle shower, but thunder. We need the storm, the whirlwind, the earthquake.

The feeling of the nation must be quickened; the conscience of the nation must be roused;

the propriety of the nation must be startled; the hypocrisy of the nation must be exposed;

its crimes against God and man must be proclaimed and denounced."

-- Frederick Douglass

"Happy Birthday Occupy Wall Street ... thoughts on Year One"

Fifteen years ago, I ran across a book, "100 Most Influential People in History," during one of my dalliances to my local Marin County bookstore. "Influential People" was one man's assessment on exactly that. But how he determined his rankings was the interesting part. They weren't always the reasons you would think. But after thinking about it, they made complete sense. For example:George Washington was ranked in the top 40 of all time. Understandable. But the reason why ... not so much. You…See More
