Hello ladies and gentlemen,

i am Aman Al Masri, a Syrian graduate student at the university of the Incarnate Word, San Antonio, Texas. i am doing my masters in Communication Arts. i have a question that i will appreciate your honest answers on.

do you think that we can use the concept of  Occupy Cafe and The World Cafe to discus how Americans and Arabs see each other? would it be effective to use such techniques to convey an authentic picture of both the Arab World and the American society to both audiences?

looking forward to hear your opinions,

Aman

Some can do it, some cannot.  The effectiveness will depend on the participants and on the techniques.  I cannot (begin to) guess which will be more important.

Can you just do it a few different ways, in order to learn?  Must you have great confidence in the one or two ways you try?

Hi Aman, I'm glad you're kicking this off.  I support you in this conversation as I think it's an important exchange to air.  My grandparents on my father's side came to this country from Beirut, though I never had to face the intense prejudice many Arabs face today in this country.  I'm also half white Anglo Saxon and my Lebonese grandparents were Greek Orthodox rbnot Muslim.  I don't really qualify for the typical Arabic stereotype.

I think to be able to generate authenticity and truthfulness in the face of some underlying emotional charge, there needs to grow a platform of trust.  My sense is that the consciousness of the people on this site can support the degree of respect it takes to navigate this conversation.  There are a couple of ways this could be conducted with constructive effect.  I don't have time at the moment to offer detail, but will return to share more.  Good work, Aman.

Speaking for the OC Stewards, we'd be happy to assist you in building a conversation to fit your intentions.

Peace, Justice and Freedom,

Jitendra

"Happy Birthday Occupy Wall Street ... thoughts on Year One"

Fifteen years ago, I ran across a book, "100 Most Influential People in History," during one of my dalliances to my local Marin County bookstore. "Influential People" was one man's assessment on exactly that. But how he determined his rankings was the interesting part. They weren't always the reasons you would think. But after thinking about it, they made complete sense. For example:George Washington was ranked in the top 40 of all time. Understandable. But the reason why ... not so much. You…See More
