I speak both as a strong Occupy supporter who participated in the OWS protest when in New York City and as a former senior official at the Congressional Office of Technology Assessment and the National Governors Association.  To fix the USA we no longer can think in terms of elections, because the iron grip of the two-party plutocracy has so corrupted the political system that we need an end run around this dysfunctional system.  Our Constitution gives us what is needed: an Article V convention of state delegates that could propose reform constitutional amendments (e.g., getting all private money out of politics).  It has never been used because Congress and nearly all other political powers fear the convention route to political reform.  Learn more at foavc.org and read my blog here:

Joel, to me the call for an Article V convention would lead to a multi-year effort to come to agreement on an assortment of provisions that would find the same alignments we have today in the partisan standoff.  How would you bring a myriad of issues to successful resolution in the same 10 months a single clear amendment could be launched that simultaneously was being pressed through state legislatures by a majority of the people?  The logic of simplicity is explained here, http://www.occupycafe.org/group/solutions/forum/topics/why-focus-on... .

"Happy Birthday Occupy Wall Street ... thoughts on Year One"

Fifteen years ago, I ran across a book, "100 Most Influential People in History," during one of my dalliances to my local Marin County bookstore. "Influential People" was one man's assessment on exactly that. But how he determined his rankings was the interesting part. They weren't always the reasons you would think. But after thinking about it, they made complete sense. For example:George Washington was ranked in the top 40 of all time. Understandable. But the reason why ... not so much. You…See More
