Mitch Gold Coffee as a product of massive foreign exploitation and its use in the rich cafes of the 1st world is a poor term under which to organize a movement of liberation.
What draws you to Occupy Cafe?
I'd like to bring a perspective that; colonial governments and business are illegal in the Americas. First Nation governments and heritage hold the only human sovereignty and authority. Every person on earth is originally 'indigenous' (Latin = 'self-generating' from everywhere. Protesting colonial governments and business only adds to their perceived authority. Our allegiance can be made to First Nations by discovering our own and their indigenous forms of governance. Indigene Community www.indigenecommunity.info compiles this heritage.

Welcome, Douglas.  I appreciate your concerns about the sourcing of coffee and tea and therefore about the "cafe" metaphor, as well as the rights of indigenous peoples.  Would it help to suggest that the virtual coffee we serve here is strictly fair trade/organic/shade grown?

Or maybe we might look at it this way... If we are to mend this broken world and cleanse ourselves of the sins of our history, we will not do so by reverting to some imaginary and pristine past, but rather by moving forward as one human family and learning to re-imagine all the things we do in ways that recognize the interconnected web of all life on this planet.  Including cafes and the things they serve people.

Here is a bit more on our choice of the term "cafe."

Cheers,

Ben Roberts

"Happy Birthday Occupy Wall Street ... thoughts on Year One"

Fifteen years ago, I ran across a book, "100 Most Influential People in History," during one of my dalliances to my local Marin County bookstore. "Influential People" was one man's assessment on exactly that. But how he determined his rankings was the interesting part. They weren't always the reasons you would think. But after thinking about it, they made complete sense. For example:George Washington was ranked in the top 40 of all time. Understandable. But the reason why ... not so much. You…See More
