I'm losing hope of finding the article soon, but the key thing was that turning the other cheek and giving up more than is demanded by an authority had specific cultural meanings then and there.  It's little-known that Jesus was not saying "be a wimp!"  As I recall, then okay slaps were delivered backhanded; a turned cheek would be presented to the palm and would disgrace the slapper.  Giving all your clothes to the one who demanded only your cloak would have the same effect.  There was a third recommendation, all were creative activism in tight spots.

Hi.  I captured your question at the Trinity Wall St. church online discussion because I know of an article that addresses it.  Haven't found the article yet, but will keep trying.

"Happy Birthday Occupy Wall Street ... thoughts on Year One"

Fifteen years ago, I ran across a book, "100 Most Influential People in History," during one of my dalliances to my local Marin County bookstore. "Influential People" was one man's assessment on exactly that. But how he determined his rankings was the interesting part. They weren't always the reasons you would think. But after thinking about it, they made complete sense. For example:George Washington was ranked in the top 40 of all time. Understandable. But the reason why ... not so much. You…See More
