With events being planned in at least 40 cities this Tuesday, Occupy's call for a May Day general strike represents a major effort towards national coordination and impact.

If you are planning to participate, please share something with us about it, and what you hope to see result from the collective efforts of Occupiers around the globe.

Here's some of what is being said as the day approaches:

  • Occupy Wall Street is hailing the day as "something extraordinary: the first truly nationwide General Strike in U.S. history" and offers a range of information and links for anyone who wants to see what's happening in their area or is looking for a taste of what's in store.
  • Plans to shut down the Golden Gate Bridge, notes Josh Harkinson in a Mother Jones piece, will require coordination with unions--a major test for the evolution of the movement.  At the same time, he notes that some are concerned that the move, if successful, will be unpopular with the general public.
  • "[M]ore than 100 activist groups, labor unions and other progressive organizations have pledged to participate in the rally and march" in NYC, reports Allison Kilkenny in The Nation.  She also notes that many have moved away from the "general strike" language, as such an action would be a violation of Federal Law, instead referring to the day as "a nationwide protest with themes of economic noncompliance."
What are you hearing or reading as the day approaches?  Help us get the conversation started now, and please join our call on Monday as well.

Hi there.... I am planning on meeting up with the Maine Earth Walkers in Hallowell and walking the last 3 miles with them to Augusta. Really looking forward to meeting them and going to the Hall of Flags !!

Michel Nagler, of the Metta Center for Nonviolence,  joined our call today, and mentioned this piece he has recently published in Yes! Magazine: http://www.yesmagazine.org/people-power/occupy-2.0-the-great-turning

"Happy Birthday Occupy Wall Street ... thoughts on Year One"

Fifteen years ago, I ran across a book, "100 Most Influential People in History," during one of my dalliances to my local Marin County bookstore. "Influential People" was one man's assessment on exactly that. But how he determined his rankings was the interesting part. They weren't always the reasons you would think. But after thinking about it, they made complete sense. For example:George Washington was ranked in the top 40 of all time. Understandable. But the reason why ... not so much. You…See More
