With events being planned in at least 40 cities this Tuesday, Occupy's call for a May Day general strike represents a major effort towards national coordination and impact.

Here's some of what is being said as the day approaches:

• Occupy Wall Street is hailing the day as "something extraordinary: the first truly nationwide General Strike in U.S. history" and offers a range of information and links for anyone who wants to see what's happening in their area or is looking for a taste of what's in store.  
• Plans to shut down the Golden Gate Bridge, notes Josh Harkinson in a Mother Jones piece, will require coordination with unions--a major test for the evolution of the movement.  At the same time, he notes that some are concerned that the move, if successful, will be unpopular with the general public.
• "[M]ore than 100 activist groups, labor unions and other progressive organizations have pledged to participate in the rally and march" in NYC, reports Allison Kilkenny in The Nation.  She also notes that many have moved away from the "general strike" language, as such an action would be a violation of Federal Law, instead referring to the day as "a nationwide protest with themes of economic noncompliance."
